RE-SOCIALISING WITH PWP

The importance of the need to re-socialise should not be under-estimated - it is a 'must do' coping strategy - it gets easier every time at Parents Without Partners. Re-socialise in a safe friendly environment.

Because it is a safe - no pressure environment. We have all been through a similar situation. We are a down to earth, easy going group. Not having a partner is the norm. We nearly all go to functions on our own. We like our parties as a diversion from worries. You can meet people and make friends. Functions are affordable. There is something to go to every week. You can set the pace for your involvement. You don't have to explain why your on your own.

Some Re-Socialising Tips

Let a committee member know you are new and don't know anyone - they will introduce you. At functions just join in a group standing around talking and introduce yourself - go with the flow. If someone asks you to dance - consider saying yes - have fun. Why not ask someone for a dance - they might say yes. After a while mix and mingle with different people. Say hello to people you have met at previous functions - use peoples names (first names on name tags). Do come again - it gets a bit easier each time - eventually you will enjoy and look forward to that regular contact you're your peers at PWP.

.PWP DOES IT AGAIN.

SUBMIT YOUR BRANCH FUNCTION REPORTS

Each week we would like to share with other members what great functions are organized by PWP. We will publish one function report a week – so why not tell us about a dinner, a party, a picnic, a kids function or a health and fitness function. Don't date the entry – it just needs to have happened in the past month or so. Let's make it good news week. Why not submit a brief one paragraph report of one of your branches recent successful functions. Email to Ross at rossemail@gmail.com

HIDDEN BRAIN INJURIES WARNING IN CHILDREN

School nurses need to be alert to the symptoms of 'hidden' brain damage in children, warns a charity. The Children's Trust is calling for more awareness of acquired brain injury, which can be caused by head injuries sustained in a fall, or from choking, meningitis or a brain tumour. It warns that on the surface children with ABI look and behave normally until put under pressure or in a situation they are unused to, for example the transition from primary to secondary school. Fiona Adcock, head of the trust's community support team, said: 'For those with an acquired brain injury it's around this time of year that any difficulties they have in thinking, making friends and managing their behaviour in class can start to have a major negative impact on their lives. They can become isolated, fall behind and may end up being excluded. It's vital that children with ABI are diagnosed and helped to reach their full potential.' A NICE guideline estimated that around 5,000 schoolchildren in England receive injuries annually that can leave them with a hidden disability. Details

Seven Wonders of the IT World (2 of 7)

First, there were the Seven Wonders of the World. Then there was a New Seven Wonders list, voted on Internet-style. That got us thinking: What are the seven wonders of the IT world? Here's a look at seven of the biggest, most extreme and most unusual computers and projects.

#2 Computer Farthest From Earth

Nasa's Voyager 1 Satellite

Distance from Earth: Voyager is three times farther away than Pluto. That's to say at least 4 billion kilometers, times three.

Distance from the sun: 15.44 terameters (1012 metres).

Distance logged per day: 1 million miles.

Years old: Almost 30, having launched on Sept. 5, 1977.

Places it's dropped by: Jupiter and Saturn, on the way to the edge of space as we know it.

How it communicates with Earth: Uses NASA's Deep Space Network, a system of antennas around the Earth. There's no IM out here: Signals travelling at light speed take 14 hours one-way to reach Voyager.

Daily to-do list: Collects data on solar wind, energetic particles, magnetic fields and radio waves.

Powered by: Radioisotope thermoelectric generators.

Power needed: About 300 watts, the amount of power needed for a bright light bulb.

Next: Google's Ultra-mysterious Data Center
