.STATE PRESIDENT'S DESK

PWP NSW is the largest singles and single parent not-for-profit volunteer association in Australia. We welcome single parents who are separated, divorced, never married and widowed in to our PWP community and a great alternative life style. PWP NSW is also open to singles with no-children to join as associate members. An organization like ours makes it a bit easier to adjust to being single again. Our success is the result of a lot of work by a lot of dedicated volunteers contribution over the years. There are a lot of members who can boast to having been apart of PWP NSW and that PWP NSW has helped make some major life adjustments. Why not encourage your single parent friends to join with the strength of PWP NSW.

.PWP DOES IT AGAIN

PWP TRAINING DAY

There was a great roll-up with all branches represented at the annual PWP Training Day for all branch and state committee members and other organisers. It is good to learn more about the running of the group and to realize how much is involved in other committee members jobs. A lot of the information could apply elsewhere – some handy for work. Barry did a great job getting the whole thing organized and running so smoothly. All the presenters were very good and more than willing to reveal some of their trade secrets. There was exchange of information during and between sessions from the participants from all the branches. It is this sharing of information and ideas that is behind PWP NSW being such a great organization. Looking forward to next years now.

:-) Hi-Tech Yuppie

A Montana cowboy was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW races out of a cloud of dust towards him.

The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy, "If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?"

The cowboy looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, "Sure, Why not?"

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3 cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite navigation system to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany.

Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses an MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response.

Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says, "You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves."

"That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves," says the cowboy.

He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car.

Then the cowboy says to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?"

The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, "Okay, why not?"

You're a Congressman for the U. S. Government," says the cowboy.

"Wow! That's correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?"

"No guessing required." answered the cowboy. "You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You tried to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you don't know a thing about cows ... this is a herd of sheep.

Now give me back my dog.

-COMPUTING TIP-

CREATE YOUR OWN PDF FILES

PDF (Portable Document Files) files are an excellent way to distribute documents. The preservation of formatting, text and images, plus the support Adobe has offered for multiple platforms make PDF the easiest way to let others view your documents. For those who operate business using electronic communication, it provides a great way to present invoices, order forms and is widely used as a method of proofing graphic design work.

I use the following software for creating my own PDFs.

Three products in the suite are freely downloadable from www.pdf995.com and are sponsored by advertising. pdf995 is the print driver that lets you create PDF files. The next 2 programs are optional extras (which I personally don’t use). The second program, pdfEdit995, adds features such as support for watermarks, the ability to convert some external links to live links, and an Optimize command for Web pages. A third program, Signature995, adds security features such as the option to prevent users from printing and copying your PDF files.

Upon opening pdfEdit995, or after printing to the virtual printer, a web page will open in your default browser displaying a bit of advertising. For a very nominal fee of $9.95 US per product, or $19.95 for the suite, the advertising can be disabled.
