NATIONAL CONVENTION 2006

Four SMC members and two ex-branch committee members travelled to Canberra for the 2006 National Convention held in Canberra. Some of the items discussed were children’s subsidies, welfare issues, FITAP entries, small branch organization, starting up new branches, and other organizations such as the Child Support Agency, DOCS, ATO, Lone Fathers and Relationships Australia. Brett and Ross were NSW delegates participating in the debates and discussions. Dorothy and Yo were participating observers. Mark and Jacqui assisted with the children’s camp, taking their charges to the movies and other outings.

The Conference ran like clockwork, with meetings beginning on time and ending with the next delicious meal. The elections ran smoothly. The CSA Workshop was informative ending with the presenter, Barry Williams, offering to come and share his experience and knowledge with NSW members. The newly elected National President expressed interest in attending our ADM in June and is keen to meet as many members as possible.

National FITAP awards were presented prior to the children being transported to their camp site. Quest awards were presented to some very deserving entrants at the Conference Ball where all were dressed to impress and entertained by a two piece band. Our State/Hills President was caught dancing; as was our State Membership Director/Hills VPP. Remarkable!!!!!!!

There was sightseeing, morning walks, swimming, Ralph hunts, Easter egg sharing, plenty of fundraising raffles and lots of new friendships being forged.

On the last night, each state was encouraged to act a small skit. Our own Little Johnny kept the audience amused and Ralph made a guest appearance. Some Conference awards were presented. The best s..t stirrer went to Tasmania, and NSW got the Noddy Award – didn’t we Ross?

The 2007 National Convention will be held in Queensland at a by-the-sea location. The National Committee hope to secure the site for the whole week so that everyone can have a relaxed holiday after the proceedings. Watch your Soleparent for details closer to the date.

There are many dedicated volunteers throughout Australia, who unselfishly give their time to promote the values of membership to PWP which is enormously encouraging. “Your membership is your passport to other branch functions” and you will be made very welcome interstate.

EVER WONDERED . . . ?

Virtual Community - a term commonly used to describe a group of people who exchange ideas through computer networks, listservs, newsgroups, and Web-based bulletin boards. They might not ever meet face-to-face. Generally these people meet over the long-term, on a regular basis, and share their ideas about a variety of subjects, depending upon their special interest. The discussions could relate to hobbies, music, health, self help issues, and professional and scholarly activities.
