Values Lost
This was printed in The Northern Star on Monday 10/10/2005 and is so true.
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr Common Sense. Mr Sense had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable Parenting strategies (adults, not kids are in charge). His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place: Reports of a six year old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate: teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student.
Mr Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility, and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers, My Rights and Ima Whiner.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he had gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing. (Thanks Keith)

:-) What A Legal System...
A Charlotte, NC man having purchased a box of very rare, very expensive cigars, insured them against fire among other things.
Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of cigars and without having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the man filed a claim against the insurance company.
In his claim, the man stated the cigars were lost "in series of small fires".
The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason; that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion.
The man sued......and won! In delivering the ruling, the judge agreed that the claim was frivolous.
He stated nevertheless that the man held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure against fire, without defining what is considered to be, "unacceptable fire," and was obligated to pay the claim.
Rather than endure a lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid the man $15,000.00 for the rare cigars he had lost in the "fires".
Here comes the best part...!!
After the man cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!!
With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the man was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000.00 fine.
Afterthought: People are getting smarter nowadays; they are letting lawyers, instead of their conscience, be their guide. -Will Rogers
